The European Commission’s Sustainable and Smart Mobility Strategy is an excellent opportunity to demonstrate the key role of renewable, low-carbon and natural gases in contributing to a cost-effective decarbonisation of transport.


As proven over the past years, decarbonising the transport sector is challenging and requires a transitional approach. “Gas-based technologies will be needed to accelerate the deployment of truly smart and sustainable mobility across Europe”, explains GasNaturally Chair François-Régis Mouton. In his view, “there is a variety of demand within the transport sector, so it’s important to offer a broad range of solutions”.

It is therefore essential that all options, including low-carbon and renewable gaseous fuels, are deployed to foster the decarbonisation of transport. Reflecting this approach in the upcoming revisions of the Directive on Alternative Fuels Infrastructure and the Renewable Energy Directive will be of utmost importance.

On top of that, these solutions must offer the lowest possible cost to society – using existing infrastructures and proven engine technologies can help do just that. With minimal additional investment, today’s Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) infrastructure for example can be fit for climate neutral BioLNG. Doing so reduces deployment time, costs, and the risk of stranded assets for the EU.

Available energy solutions such as biomethane, LNG and BioLNG are all opportunities to decarbonise heavy-duty transport and shipping. Autogas, also known as automotive LPG, is another valuable option to considerably reduce emissions in road transport.
